Fed: Catholic Health Australia says stem cell decision tragic

Catholic Health Australia has labelled Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD'S decision to supportembryonic stem cell research as tragic, saying it devalues human life.

After days of consultation with church leaders and scientists, Mr HOWARD says the useof surplus IVF embryos for stem cell research will be permitted, but will be governedby carefully crafted regulations.

Catholic Health Australia chief executive FRANCIS SULLIVAN says some life is now goingto be treated differently and it's going to be okay to destroy human life.

She says it's a tragic decision and isn't in the interests of human dignity.
