Researchers hope to no longer be "snowed" when predicting future avalanches

Some scientists believe that revealing the properties and behavior of snow could lead to better predictions of potential avalanches in the western United States as well as in other alpine regions of the world. In a new study funded by the National Science Foundation, Montana State University Professor of Geography Kathy Hansen is focusing on snow stability over space and time. Karl Birkeland, an adjunct professor at Montana State and an avalanche scientist for the U.S. Forest Service National Avalanche Center, is co-principal investigator for the two-year study.
