Fed: Labor calls for judicial inquiry into detention centres

The federal opposition has renewed calls for a judicial inquiry into detention centre
policies after a young Iranian boy removed from his parents and taken to hospital.

Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK confirmed last night that six-year-old SHAYAN BEDRAIE
had been removed from his family and placed with foster parents.

The boy was taken to hospital after allegedly being driven into withdrawal by the horrors
of an immigration detention centre.

Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY has told ABC radio he doesn't know details of the story,
but other stories about detention centres mean a judicial inquiry should be held.

Mr BEAZLEY says there should be a judicial inquiry into every aspect of the system.

He also says a Labor government would introduce a coastguard to address immigration problems.
